Yankee
Doodle Dixie
Saturday, October 1
at 1:00 PM
A laugh-out-loud romp around Memphis, with the
heartwarming truths about coming home, Yankee
Doodle Dixie is a testament to women, mothers,
family and friends—in snow or sunshine, alike. Once a
happy, well-adjusted wife with a personality some might
consider doormatish, newly singled mom, Leelee
Satterfield learns how to stand up for herself again,
although this time she makes sure to trade her snow
boots back in for sandals.
"Southern to the
core…funny to the bone. In Lisa Patton's new novel she
proves that we can go home again, and in many cases we
should."— Fannie Flagg
"Not a beat missed when we head below the Mason-Dixon
Line and pick up with Southern belle Leelee Satterfield
on her ofttimes riotous but always touching quest for
home, friendship and love. In this charming sequel to
Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'Easter, Lisa Patton's voice
leaves us laughing, crying, and definitely wanting
more!"—Susan Gregg Gilmore, bestselling author of
Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen.
Bring your BGF and don't

MEMOIR WRITING:
8 Week Course with Becky Kraegel
Becky Kraegel has been an inspiration to aspiring
writers — both at FoxTale and Kennesaw University —
because she is chock full of encouragement and rock
solid teaching techniques. If you’ve often thought of
writing your own memoir, now is the time, and FoxTale is
the place! Starting Sept. 20, Kraegel will base her new
class on Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of
Writing Memoir by Natalie Goldberg.
“To write memoir, we must first know how to remember.
Through timed, associative, and meditative exercises,
the text guides you to the attentive state of thought
in which you discover and open forgotten doors of
memory.” Along with the help of Natalie Goldberg, Becky
welcomes aspiring writers of all levels and encourages
them to find their unique voice to tell their
stories. If you’ve got a story, it deserves to be
told!

Ann Hite, Ghost
on Black Mountain—Nellie
Clay married Hobbs Pritchard without even noticing he
was a spell conjured into a man, a walking, talking
ghost story. But her mama knew. She saw it in her tea
leaves: death. Folks told Nellie to get off the mountain
while she could, to go back home before it was too late.
Hobbs wasn't nothing but trouble. He'd even killed a
man. No telling what else. That mountain was haunted,
and soon enough, Nellie would feel it too. One way or
another, Hobbs would get what was coming to him. The
ghosts would see to that. . .
Told in the stunning voices of five women whose lives
are inextricably bound when a murder takes place in
rural Depression-era North Carolina, Ann Hite's
unforgettable debut spans generations and conjures the
best of Southern folk-lore—mystery, spirits, hoodoo, and
the incomparable beauty of the Appalachian landscape.
"The authentic voice of Nellie Pritchard, who comes
to Black Mountain as a new bride, wraps around you and
pulls you deep into this haunted story. Ann Hite
delivers an eerie page-turner that I couldn't put down."
–Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of
Gods in Alabama and Backseat Saints

A Southern Poets
Reading Evening with
Janisse Ray, John Lane & Thomas Rain Crowe
Decatur Library Auditorium
(Georgia CTr for the Book)
"A Southern Poets Reading” evening presents three
remarkably gifted writers well-known throughout our
region and beyond: Janisse Ray, John Lane and Thomas
Rain Crowe. All three are acclaimed for their lovely,
insightful writings about nature and the environment.
Janisse is a native Georgian whose books include
Ecology or a Cracker Childhood and
Drifting Into Darien, and her new poetry
collection, A House of Branches, is
informed by her life-long interest in wilderness
preservation.
John Lane is a South Carolinian who writes powerfully
about the woods and wilds in many books and whose new
volume of poetry, Abandoned Quarry, marks
him as ”the finest Southern landscape poet we have
today.” Thomas Crowe is a native North Carolinian and
author of a dozen books of prose and poetry, and his
just-published book of poems Crack Light
illustrated by photographs speaks movingly to the ties
between humans and the earth in his western North
Carolina hill country.

Crystal Cook,
Casserole Queens Cookbook—Crystal
Cook and Sandy Pollock make a mean Chicken Pot Pie,
elevating the classic recipe with white wine and fresh
tarragon. Their recipe won them such a following in
Texas that Bobby Flay took notice and challenged them to
a Throwdown. It turns out that the Casserole Queens, as
the duo is known, are much more than one-hit wonders of
the one-dish dinner. They have built an entire business
around revamping the ultimate quick-fix dinner for
modern tastes.
In The Casserole Queens Cookbook, they
share their fresh, updated, from-scratch recipes for
traditional dishes. Tuna Noodle is brought up a notch
with a homemade cream sauce and a kick of cayenne
pepper; Halibut Enchiladas with Salsa Verde are
surprisingly light and vibrant; Mandarin Meatloaf has a
sweet orange flavor that recharges a beloved weeknight
staple. There are home-style desserts, like Gooey Apple
Butter Cake, and great brunch dishes, such as Frenchy
Toast Casserole. The Queens have thought of everything,
providing advice on scaling and freezing casseroles so
that anyone can stock the freezer with go-to dinners.

Adam Lazarus:
Super Bowl Monday
is a thorough retelling of Super Bowl XXV, the epic
January 1991 showdown between the New York Giants and
the Buffalo Bills. Great characters and a gripping
finish to the closest episode in Super Bowl history made
for a wonderful conclusion to the game's Silver
Anniversary. But what establishes that day as a special
moment in American sports history was the cloud of war
hanging over the game and the nation.
Ten days before the Giants defeated the Bills 20-19 in
Tampa Stadium, the United States had authorized
Operation Desert Storm and begun the Persian Gulf War.
The book is entitled Super Bowl Monday
because the hundreds of thousands of American soldiers
who were able to watch the Giants vs. the Bills did so
on Arabic Standard Time, several hours ahead of Eastern
Standard Time. For those men and women on duty in Saudi
Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, Super Bowl XXV took place
early Monday morning. Super Bowl Monday features
original research from newspaper and video archives in
addition to lengthy interviews with many of the game's
stars.
